Welcome to the West. Welcome to Butte,
Montana.
Here you’ll see a
glimpse of what the old west was really made of. As you look around
town, you’ll see constant reminders of what started out as a booming
mining town with cottages that once housed an estimated 100,000
miners. With over 4,000 historical structures, Butte shows her
tenacity as one of the West’s greatest cities. In the old mining
days, Butte was home to millionaires and minors alike. She was
nick-named “The Richest Hill on Earth” and today, the proud
residents of Butte still feel rich to live in such a uniquely
historical city.
Butte is known for
such events as the Annual Ice Sculpting Contest and the Christmas
Stroll. Before his days of fame, Evel Knievel grew up in Butte and
there’s even the “Evel Knievel Days” which brings hundreds of people
to town for the annual event. Throughout the year, you can visit
places like the Copper King Mansion. Built in 1888 the mansion was
the residence of William Andrews Clark,
one of Montana's "Copper Kings" who became one of the
wealthiest men in the world due to his mining and banking ventures.
You can also visit the World Museum of Mining or the local Mineral
Museum located on the campus of Montana Tech University of Montana.
The Butte area
offers lots of outdoor recreational opportunities as well such as
trout- fishing, hiking and world class golf courses as well as many
other cultural experiences throughout the region.
No matter where you
turn in Butte, you’ll find ghosts of the old west tipping their hats
to you as if to say “Sit down, kick ‘yer boots off and stay a
while.”
